ya 7.15/hour... Pending on where you live the companies will actually set it higher, like where i am, most places are actually 8+.. i get paid $9.07/hour.. but its base pay was $9.. target, my friend at Walmart gets paid like $8 and my mom at Walbaums or w/e it is, is $8.... so ya, area in NY Differs..
In Aus, it costs more to live, so ya your wages are higher, but in reality its may cost the same

I think thats a Global Problem right now, as prices for oil increases everything else is as well, because companies don't wana spend on the gas, they charge the consumer it sad in away..... Companies don't want to increase wages cause they'd loose money, its sad to say, its all oil....... if gas was cheap, then prices would prob be low. (in my mind)
Been looking into building one (electric car) Plenty of people have, especially in your part of the world. Biggest drawback right now is batteries. The technology is pretty close to where it was 50 yrs ago. You need a boat load of batteries to go maybe 35 miles / 56 km between charges.
