I'm looking forward to the phpBB 3 version.

Secondly, I think I like the idea of replacing the flash buttons with gifs.

it depends on what sort of forum u r running and what u plan to do with it.

Personally i love vBulletin and wouldnt use anything else

I'm a guitar player. I had a simple guitar forum using phpBB2, but most of my members were less than satisfied with it. People are really use to the features of vBulletin, including myself.

My site was either hacked, or crashed due to a server problem, so I'm kind of in a "Start Over" mode. I have a beta version of phpBB3 running on my server, but with NO estimated release date, or even speculation of a release date, it's really forcing into looking at other options. IMHO, phpBB3 at its best will NOT be as good as vBulletin.

I suppose you get what you paid for, right?

Don't be surprised if I end up buying vBulletin before the end of the day. Besides, I'll bet that I can count on some great skinning support from HERE!!!

i'd use SMF as it doesn't get hacked like phpbb all the time,
but there is no such template for that yet.

and, personally, i don't have the time to work on that atm.

when i get time, i will port the theme to SMF. (Simple Machines - Home of SMF: Free PHP and MySQL forum software)

Unfortunately, my web hosting company doesn't meet the minimums to run vBulletin, grrrrrrrrrrrrr!

I set up phpBB2 until phpBB3 comes out, or until my server gets up to speed so that I can install vBulletin.

At any rate, how hard would it be to remove the column on the left? I really don't need it. I can re-do the header graphic with no problem, but I have no idea of how to remove the column.

There is 3 cells in the overall layout the first one being the the left side for the image, then 2nd being the spacing gap, and the 3rd being the forum section.
If u know HTML it will only take u about 5 mins, u just need to edit the overall_header.tpl and overall_footer.tpl templates
