How to update your custom style without losing any changes you made

Rate this Entry
I have had alot of people ask me about how to update their skins without losing any of the changes they have made to the templates.

The best way to do this so you dont waste all your hard work everytime you update is to create a child style like below.

Once the child style is created like in the picture above rename the child style to whatever you like and deselect the main style like in the picture below.

All changes you now make are done to the 2nd selected style, but when you update, upload the new XML overwriting the 1st style.

    Hey quick question...
When making a child style, do you click the dropdown by the parent style and select "add child style" or do you click "add new style'" and select the parent from the page that shows up. And is there any difference?

i did this, and it still reverted back to the default font colors and header. pretty much all my changes were lost... any reason why?

When uploading the new updated XML did you overwrite the template or the child?

I don't understand ,what is the purpose of the child style? Should I keep the child style after I merge to the original?

Hello the purpose of the child style is that you make the changes to it without touching the original style. When you update you merge/overwrite the default style without losing your modifications.

Thanks for this tutorial Sean. So when I update I overwrite the parent style. And the changes I made to the child style are saved but the style will be updated anyway. So using the child style will mean I have an updated version of the style with my old template changes. Right? :)

If you use all six templates is this method the correct way to go as well?
