subdomains

was wondering if someone can explain sub-domains to me, from what i think it is , is if i set up a sub-domain i can use that as a web address
example : my domain is , i payed for that domain. what im wonting is to not have to pay for say a domain called www.watchersworks.net.
my host info page says i have free sub-domains, but i dont wont to have to pay for a new domain name, if I can do it, just dont know how.
heres how it tells me to set it up

You are able to create a subdomain via the control panel. Please follow the step-by-step guide:

First please create a folder in the /www folder via the "online file manager" in the control panel or via your ftp client, you can name the new folder /subdomain (note:did that called it WatchersWorks)

Afterwards please create a subdomain, you are able to create a subdomain under the "web server" tab in your control panel - please choose to create a virtual host. You simply type in "subdomain" in the first box and in the second box you scroll down to "your-domain.com". The third box "Link to path*" please type in "/www/subdomain" (this is the folder you have created via the "online filemanager" at your account or via your ftp client).

Please note it may take 2-3 hours before the changes are visible in the Internet.
following the instructions and creating a folder and chosing create new virtualhost it tells me this
Quote:
Path to Folder The path does not exist on your account. Kindly create this folder via FTP and retry.
so can someone explaine sub-domains to me so i can make sure im not doing something wrong?

Re: subdomains

well, subdomains are just things like

work.worldofarkania.com <- all it does is point to a directory called
/www/work (unless you said it to point elsewhere.)

otherwise, get me on msn and i can do it for you.

btw, ur host's cpanel sucks
