Look at what Microsoft did with IE. It was open for everyone, but once it became popular they locked everyone in.
IE:
Someone comes out with a technology that threatens Microsoft's dominance: Netscape.
Microsoft develops a multi platform technology to defeat it: IE on Mac.
Microsoft incorporates it into its OS to get it into 90% of the PCs.
Once the competition is destroyed, it levels off development, and ends support on non-Windows platforms: IE on Mac.
Look at how they locked people in with Microsoft word. It was open and everyone started using it. Then after they had most of the market share they locked out MAC.
Not to mention it will be using the .net framework. How long until the next generation bot nets misuse silverlight like it does with active x
also look at ActiveSync. It is a proprietary protocol used by PDAs and handheld devices for data transfer with a personal computer. The protocol forces users to run a Microsoft operating system on the PC.
Although Flash is a complete piece of crap, as far as it stands I would rather take my chance with their proprietary software than when Microsoft locks us in.
Like I said, the FIRST hit is free.
