LOL I hear ya. I posted the link above for the flash movie with the reaper and shining blade.
I also had the same problem with PS (image ready actually) with it editing all layers. Unfortunately, I don't remember what the fix was.. but there was one! I ended up using Paint Shop Pro for the animations because IR/PS was difficult to work with, and the files were always large, no matter what I did.
Well, see here's the thing with those orbs: It wont look like a ball if you use the fuzzy circular paint brush, as opposed to the the other one. and choose a bigger size if you go that route, though.
BUT, like I mentioned.. use the 105mm lens flair filter. It gives the impression of a shine.
Now, I'm not talking the same thing when I say "orb" and "lens flair." If you go to that link I posted you'll see how the lens flair traveling the length of the blade looks like light gleaming off the edge. BUT... click the link below to see "orbs," which again is not the same thing:
Orbs:

Another example I made is here:
http://www.autumnwhisperstome.com/somberfright.html look to the right of the image to see the orbs.
You'll get the effect you want if you use lens flair filtering in PS. The orb may not look right.
Also, what I normally do is create the image with the lens flair moving.. create another image with the lens flair moving farther down the blade, and so on. You'll have a series of jpg's that are your animation. Just take them into whatever animation program you use and put the images in order. You may have to use a transition effect, like a fade of one image in one frame to the next.
Hope I haven't confused you further. lol
