there has to be a better way

....to make tiling background images. But I don't know what it is! I want to make a tiling bg image (duh), but I don't like using those little programs that do it for you (like quick tile) because it ends up boxy, or it just ends up looking like something my grandma would've made in basket weaving class.

I'd like to learn how to make bg images so that I have complete control over what I'm doing, but the online tutorials I'm finding are pretty old school, having you make "noise" backgrounds. ugh.

So... anyone have a suggestion, or a tutorial, etc.?

Lines or grids, huh? I suppose that's one option.

or make an 20*20px image that repeats itself at all 4 sides, so you could have a rope or something simular ?
