Private forum :: how to create?

How do I make a forum on my board private to all members except those given permission? I don't really want the forum hidden, but I want only certain people to access it.

I went to a couple of sites about this, including phpBB's site, but I'm not finding what I need, only hacks for this. I thought this is a standard function.. no?

no need for hax, just use membergroups.
(hidden ones)

and give those groups permissions, and put the members you want into those membergroups.

simple, aint it?

hes right.. you have to go into the options and set it so only people with a certian rank/title/name can get into that area

lets say you want to get to the spot but not me

make your self a rank (dont matter what it be) mod or just special person and tell the forum thats the only rank that can come in.

i think that makes sense

Okay, I "think" I get it. lol So I don't really need a usergroup, just a new rank to give to certain people, right?

Okay, I created a group, but there's nowhere to add members to the group. Also, there's radio buttons with Open, Closed, and Hidden.. which one do I choose? Right now I'm the only member of the group because I don't know how to add anyone.

I also tried to add a different rank, but it's asking for a minimum number of posts.

i would take hidden ?

and rank isn't what you want.
to add sum1 i think you have to find the usergroups and add sum1 there, or in the profile.
(it's been way to long since i've used phpbb)
if i would see the admin section i would know..

Well, there wasn't any option to add to the group, strangely enough. I'm still not sure how to do that, so I'll probably search again at the phpbb site and see what's what.

A new problem has arose though----I can't seem to do a backup. Nothing downloads. It used to, but not anymore.
