Tutorial Problems

Hi All

As you may know if you saw my intorduction thread i am interested in getting a start in design. If you havent seen my into well now you knwo i want to get into design

Well anyway i have used quiote a few tutorials and had great success in replicating the process from start to finish to do the tutorial. But i have one problem with almost every tutorial that i do. I cannot take what i learn from one tutorial and apply it to a different situation.

It just seems like a text effect that works when i do it int he tutorial, then doesnt work properly when i try it for myself. Or the way this picture was done worked good for the tutorial but anything else i try to apply the principles to just ends up a mess. Or the other big annoance is that i will try a tutorial and cannot find one of the brushes or cammands to use for a fairly important part of the design.

Anyway i will get to the point, what can everyone suggest that i may be able to take more of what i learn from tutorials to be able to better apply it to what i want to do myself?

Thanks for any help anyone can offer

Regards
Joel

Re: Tutorial Problems

ok best thingi can tell you is this...

tutorials only teach you how to do a certain effect not when and where to use it..

ur lacking inspiration from what ya just said to me... trying looking around other ppls sites, gain a feeel for what other ppl have done then try and come up wioth somethign your self...

i have some of the same problems but suddly somethign will hit me and it will match with what i am trying to do...

hoped that help...

Re: Tutorial Problems

That is kind of it i dont really have inspiration i see plenty what i would like to do but i dont see anyway that i could possibly complete them.

For example, you sig image, i do not have any clue or see anyway i could do somthing even remotely similar to the curves and such in it, i would be looking at doing that only really by hand and would be fed up with attempting it within minutes of getting started.

Another one that i seen which really interested me was the concept car tutorial at purphotoshop.com, but even seeing the step by step images i wouldnt have a clue what folters or brushes or such i woudl ahve to use to get the differen layers how they are suppose to be without doing practically all of ti by hand. Now i am assuming that there must be someway to do these sort of things automatically to some extent and that doing it by hand isnt the only way?

Re: Tutorial Problems

From my point of view and learning I think I will only get to the point you want to get to from a year or so of using photoshop. I know what the renders and stuff do, know about a few techniques but the rest I get from tutorials and they either stuff up or don't. I can't always remember what I did in a tute so I wing it most of the time.

I found some tutorials don't use the shortcut keys like ctl B for colour balance and only one tute I have come across even uses colour balance, the rest use hue/saturation to colour the image.

My shortcut keys won't even work now for some reason unknown to me.

Inspiration is something I lack for example last night. I tried like 4 times to do a sig with the theme of 'summer' and still couldn't come up with anything.

The brushes I don't really use and prob have only once cos I suck at it and I kinda want to impress hobo so gotta stick to abstract lol he doesn't like pics in sigs either so I try keep that to a minimum.

Re: Tutorial Problems

the sig i have right now is a simple all Brush sig, meaning i downloaded the brished and just put them on it.. all i did was add my own custom brishing for the color, as simple as that

Re: Tutorial Problems

Here I was believing you were anti-brush. I was totally impressed with the curly stuff hobes and thought you created it yourself and it gave me the 'wow factor' .. now I am not so impressed lol.
