I'm hitting this one late but... Maybe take the red area out entirely and replace it with a red mist-y sorta thing instead. I think the thing that seems out of place is that there is no form or substance to the red area. You did a fantastic job of the door. That sort of detail in that minimal lighting is very well done. Now put that same gravity on the kids other side. That should balance it visually as well as symbolically. Simply, go with a red mist-y, creeping death sorta feel with a Asian ghost feel (as the dainty young man earlier suggested) and you should see vast improvement in reaction. I think it'll even make it a helluva lot creepier.
