Got some spare time this weekend, and i need to format my other pc running windows XP, and i thought hmm why not give this Gentoo Linux a try

Gentoo Linux -- Gentoo Linux News is the correct place to download?

I see a few packages 'minimal' 'universal' and 'live' etc etc

Which is the best one to download?

You would want minimal, that way you're forced to download the newest portage tree and whatnot

Might want to go with Ubuntu instead of Gentoo. There seems to be more access to current tutorials and such for Linux n00bs.

well.. ubuntu is designed for noobs and requires no knowledge of what you are doing for most things,

Gentoo forces you to know how the distro and how linux works right from the start, which results in a nice noob-free zone in the community

yet, a surprising lack of elitists (with exceptions, ofcourse)
